On January 21, 2025, at 07:20, the Orillia Fire Department responded to a structure fire in one of the oldest buildings in the city, located in the downtown core. The weather was sunny, with frigid temperatures around -27°C, including the wind chill. These extreme temperatures persisted throughout the day.
Pump 2, a 2019 Fort Garry pumper, was the second arriving pumper on the scene. It supplied multiple handlines and the deck gun to combat the fire, which eventually spread into the building's attic.
Over the course of the day, the truck became encased in a sheet of ice but continued supplying water for over 14 hours without any technical or mechanical issues. Once operations were complete, we had to break the tires free from the ice and slowly drive it back to the fire station for thawing. After the ice melted at the station, a thorough inspection was conducted, and no issues were found.
A total of 6.7 million litres of water was pumped onto the fire by all apparatus on scene. Our Fort Garry pumper was built for these conditions and performed flawlessly.
